Why Children in Los Angeles Are in Dire Need of Arts Education

In an era when STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects dominate the educational landscape, the arts are often left by the wayside. This trend is particularly alarming in California, where schools are increasingly failing to provide students with a proper education in the arts. For children in Los Angeles, especially those in underserved communities, the lack of arts education is a critical issue that needs immediate attention.

The State of Arts Education in California

California has long been a beacon of cultural and artistic innovation. However, paradoxically, its public education system is falling short when it comes to arts education. Budget cuts, standardized testing pressures, and a heightened focus on STEM subjects have led to a significant reduction in arts programs across the state.

According to SRI Education’s 2022 study, “Creativity Challenge: The State of Arts Education in California,” most schools in California have a long way to go to meet the state's mandate of teaching all students dance, music, theater, and visual arts, revealing that only 11% of schools are meeting that requirement, and that "14% of schools with mostly low income students offered all four disciplines, compared to 32% of schools with majority affluent students."

The Dire Need for Arts Education in Los Angeles

The situation is even more dire in Los Angeles. Many schools, particularly those in underserved communities, lack the resources to offer comprehensive arts programs. These schools often focus on core subjects to meet state standards, leaving little room for creative pursuits. The result is a generation of students deprived of the invaluable benefits that arts education can provide.

An L.A. County Arts Education Profile, which covered arts education in L.A. schools in 2015-2017, states that, "Equity continues to be a challenge in arts education. Schools with a larger share of English learners, more students eligible for free and reduced price meals (a proxy for low income) and more students of color tend to provide less arts instruction which is of lower quality. The evidence for this is stronger in elementary grades than secondary."

To help shine a spotlight on this issue, the Los Angeles Unified School District recently hosted Art Appreciation and Celebration Week, held between April 22 through April 27, 2024. “Arts education is crucial now more than ever as we know that it not only allows for student creativity but can also assist in social-emotional learning,” said Board Vice President Scott M. Schmerelson. “The arts are deeply embedded into the history of Los Angeles, and our students are the future of this important industry. However, we must go further by openly celebrating and supporting them as they follow their goals in film, art, dance, or any other artistic medium.”

Still, despite L.A.'s reputation as a global cultural hub, the city still struggles to ensure that young, curious minds, particularly those in low-income areas, have access to rich and fulfilling creative experiences.

Benefits of Arts Education

Arts education is not just about teaching children to draw or play an instrument; it offers a plethora of benefits that extend far beyond the classroom. Here are some key advantages:

Cognitive Development

Engaging in the arts helps children develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Studies have shown that students who participate in arts education outperform their peers in both academic and social realms.

Emotional Well-being

The arts provide a safe space for children to express their emotions and explore their identities. This emotional outlet is crucial for mental health, helping to reduce stress and anxiety.

Social Skills

Arts education encourages collaboration and teamwork. Whether it's a group project or a school play, students learn to work together, communicate effectively, and respect diverse perspectives.

Cultural Awareness

Exposure to various art forms broadens children's horizons and fosters an appreciation for different cultures. This cultural awareness is essential in our increasingly globalized world.

Creativity and Innovation

The arts nurture creativity, an essential skill in today's innovation-driven economy. By encouraging creative thinking, arts education prepares students for future careers in a wide range of fields.
